Impression

In the Kempen you imagine yourself in one large nature reserve that does not stop at the border posts, but continues into neighboring Belgium. Winding roads, meandering rivers and beautiful paths take you past varied nature and pleasant villages, where you regularly visit an inviting terrace. Visit the many attractions, museums or excursion companies for a relaxing or educational day out.

In the Kempen you will find museums that show the local and regional history in various places. Here you will get a good impression of the history of the region and you will learn a lot about the past crafts and professions. But there are also beautiful collections and exhibitions in the field of old and new art. In addition, there are large and smaller museums that house beautiful collections, from machines and utensils to dolls and historic cars.

In the Kempen there are plenty of destinations for fun trips such as animal parks, cinemas, an (indoor) ski slope, various large (covered) playgrounds and a casino. The beach baths and subtropical swimming pools guarantee unparalleled water fun. In addition, the famous amusement parks such as Efteling, Beekse Bergen and Bobbejaanland can be reached quickly and easily from the Kempen. A beautiful golf course is also located a short distance from our Hotel.

In the Kempen you will also find:

The Content Man

The statue of the 'Contente Man' in Eersel has become the symbol of the Kempian national character. The Kempenaar used to work hard for little money. Yet he was never heard complaining, he took life as it was and enjoyed the daily things.

Images and buildings

Some notable buildings in the Kempen are the castles in Heeze and Geldrop and the former castle Cranendonck in Soerendonk. Also special are the protected village centers and the many churches, chapels and authentic buildings that are listed as monuments. Almost every place in the Kempen contains one or more sculptures, often as an art object but usually also as a symbol or memorial to a person, a craft or an event from the history of the place in question.

Border Posts

Cast iron and stone border posts along various border crossings in the Kempen are silent witnesses of the time when the border between the Netherlands and Belgium was still hermetically sealed. In addition to a number and the Dutch and Flemish lion, the year 1843 is mentioned: the year in which the boundary line was established. Abbeys on the border between the Dutch and Belgian Kempen are the 'Achelse Kluis' and the 'Abdij van Postel', with a rich historical past. Due to the beautiful location and special atmosphere, these are busy locations. If only to taste the different Abbey beers.

Burial mounds

Burial mounds are visible in various places in the Kempen countryside. The ashes of the cremated dead were buried under these mountains of earth in the Bronze Age (2000-1000 BC). Most burial mounds have been restored over time.

Mills

De Kempen still has about 30 mills today, most of which were built in the mid or late 19th century. There are different types such as standard mills, ground sailers, mountain and belt mills, scaffold mills and water mills. Several mills are still in regular operation and a number can be visited.

De Kraaienpoot

The border area between the Dutch and Belgian Kempen was the scene of smuggling in various scarce (food) products in the 1950s and 1960s. To stop the cars of border officials, the smugglers scattered 'crow's feet' on the road because one sharp point always protruded from them. The statue of 'De Kraaienpoot' in Luyksgestel still reminds us of this time.

The Copper Teut

The Kempen is the region of the 'Teuten', peddlers who set out on foot to offer their goods and services far abroad. In Luyksgestel there is a memorial for 'the Copper Teut' and Teuten houses have been preserved in various places.

Eindhoven

For a day in the city, you should definitely be in energetic Eindhoven. You can be in the heart of the city by bus, bicycle or car. Be inspired by a city bursting with museums, events and creative hotspots. Visit the industrial Strijp-S, go on extensive shopping in the city center or be illuminated in the Philips Museum. It is good to stay at De Markt for culinary enthusiasts. From the spring, this square will burst at the seams of conviviality. There are also many nice restaurants in unexpected places, such as in the old military police barracks or the restaurant of the famous designer Piet Hein Eek.
